1. Educate the kids at Wonderscope Children’s Museum
The Wonderscope Children’s Museum has been providing the Kansas City area with fun exhibits for many years. The museum is appropriate for children eight years of age and younger. The activities at Wonderscope integrate lessons about the arts, sciences, and literature. It makes sense that their mission is to “spark a lifelong love of learning through play.”
Included in the cost of admission, Wonderscope offers daily programs. The programs differ every day and give kids the opportunity to explore musical instruments, sing songs, read books and even test their speed in agility courses.
Admission costs $8 for individuals ages 2-63 and $7 for ages 64 and older. Museum members and children under the age of 2 may enter for free. Please note that Wonderscope is closed every Monday and Thanksgiving.
2. Get some serious air at Sky Zone
A visit to the Shawnee Sky Zone is a great idea for birthday parties, group outings, corporate activities or just an afternoon of fun. If you’ve never been to a Sky Zone, just imagine a room full of trampolines where you can freestyle and bounce around as much as you’d like. This Shawnee Sky Zone, in particular, offers a foam ball pit and basketball hoops to test your dunking skills. The facility also hosts volleyball and dodgeball events on different nights.
We strongly suggest checking out this Sky Zone as it’s an appropriate and fun event for all ages. One five star review on their Facebook page raves that her kids had a blast, saying that it’s “one of the rare places that can cater to both ages.”
You can find more details on the Sky Zone website. And here’s a tip for anyone who’s never been – make sure you bring your own socks; otherwise they will require you to buy a pair at the facility!
3. Experience one-of-a-kind service at Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant
Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant attracts customers from around the Kansas City area for both its excellent food and unconventional style. Instead of placing your order with the waitstaff as you would at a normal restaurant, Fritz’s customers order their meals via telephone. Your food will then be delivered by a train that runs across the entire restaurant!
You can expect to find traditional American cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Fritz’s menu. The business has been serving Kansas City families since the mid-seventies and prides itself on being a novelty restaurant where people find themselves coming back for the food.
4. Taste authentic Peruvian cuisine at Casa Latina
If you’re in the mood for some Latin American food, then stop by Shawnee’s very own Casa Latina restaurant. The restaurant offers an authentic taste of Latin America with entrees that include pan-seared chicken, enchiladas, Peruvian-style fried rice and much, much more.
Check out Casa Latina’s Facebook page to see their latest deals and events. Casa Latina regularly hosts live events on Friday and Saturday nights as well as 50 percent off margaritas from 6 – 9 p.m. (Mondays-Fridays).
And with 141 reviews on Facebook, Casa Latina has a fantastic 4.8/5 rating from customers. One reviewer raved about the authentic meals and A+ service, while another described it as “warm and welcoming.”
5. Experience the great outdoors at Shawnee Mission Park Trails
Get a taste of Shawnee nature at the Shawnee Mission Park Trails. There’s something for everyone, including casual hikers, mountain bikers, runners, dog owners and bird-watchers. The park features both paved and unpaved trails ranging from easy to difficult. It might even be worth checking out the site’s campground if you plan on staying in the area for a while.
Facebook reviewers are especially pleased with the bark park. Many suggest you bring shoes that are appropriate for muddy and rocky trails. You can read other reviews and learn more about the park by visiting their Facebook page.
